ROUNDTABLE (pt. 2 of 2): Reactions to Zuffa's plans on moving Strikeforce to pay-per-view in July - Perez, Hyden, Hobaugh, Leet, Williams and Park
ANWAR PEREZ, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
Strikeforce on pay-per-view should be quite interesting. I actually think it'll be harder than when Zuffa moved WEC to pay-per-view for the Jose Also vs. Urijah Faber fight. With the UFC promotional machine behind it, it should do well, but it'll really be telling to see what changes will be made to the overall programming for Strikeforce, similar to what happened to the WEC with their foray into pay-per-view. It has an opportunity to set itself apart, albeit, with the Zuffa brand behind it.
FRANK HYDEN, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR
I don't really like it that much. I just don't think Strikeforce has enough talent to justify putting them on pay-per-view. Fans expect a certain level of quality, and it has to be on a consistent basis. Strikeforce has some very talented fighters, but not enough of them to justify this move, especially with the June 18 card they've got set up. Also, the brand Strikeforce doesn't carry the same weight that the UFC does, it'll be a hard sell to the casual fan.
ERIC HOBAUGH, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR
Strikeforce has mostly second tier fighters and they should be on free TV. Having said that, any time Dana White is involved he will do what makes Zuffa the most money. I think that if they do not use UFC fighters on all of their pay-per-view shows the buy rates will be very poor. The only way that the buy rates are respectable is if the cost is much less than the UFC pay-per-views.
LARAMEY LEET, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR
As a fan, I really do not like it. We pay enough money in just watching the UFC pay-per-view. At the same time, I find the Strikeforce and Showtime presentation to be a little weak. I do not care for the announcers, the extra time at the end of an event, and sometime their overall ignorance of what the hell they are doing. So it would be interesting to see what the UFC does when Showtime is not in the picture.
ALEX WILLIAMS, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR
It's a bad idea. The PPV market is already oversaturated with shows that don't belong on PPV.
CHRIS PARK, MMATORCH UK SPECIALIST
The set up is really bizarre in the UK compared to the States. Being a relatively non-pay-per-view country, the set up with ESPN UK has been going very well. Single monthly payments and you get everything the channel has to offer (including the last minute signing of The Ultimate Fighter 13.)
Strikeforce, however, has been on pay-per-view station "Primetime" for the last few months and ironically means that, while 9-12 a month will provide you with all the UFC that's availiable, a Strikeforce event requires a viewer to cough up and extra 10.
That said, last weekend's showing was something special and shows like that are worth every penny.

Ref Mike Beltran’s mustache true star at Strikeforce
Cagewriter already wrote about the three biggest fight stars from Strikeforce's show on Saturday night, but we can agree that the true breakout star from the fights was referee Mike Beltran and his mustache.
That is a work of art. He could braid his mustache into a loop, and have his own facial door knocker. He could tie each end in a bow across his mouth to protest censorship, saving money on duct tape. He could attach his glasses to his mustache, thereby eliminating the need for a glasses chain. He could have signaled the draw in the Mousasi-Jardine match by holding up both ends of the mustache.
After the death of Steve Mazzagatti's mustache, the MMA world was in search of fantastic facial hair to take its place. Sure, Antonio Banuelos stepped up, but we needed more. Thanks, Mike Beltran, for filling that need.
UPDATE: Tracy Lee shared a picture of the 'stache in action from one of the undercard fights. Dare I say, it is glorious.
Thanks to Fightlinker for the top image.

Georges St. Pierre Works on Striking, Gymnastics to Prepare for Jake Shields
With just a week and a half to go before UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre puts his title on the line against Jake Shields at UFC 129, the Official GSP YouTube channel is offering up some inside looks at St. Pierre's preparation.
Some of the videos, like the one above of St. Pierre working on his striking, are about what you'd expect from any MMA fighter. But a few of the videos show how unique GSP is when it comes to his strength and conditioning work.

Nick Diaz stops Paul Daley in thrilling one-round fight to retain Strikeforce Welterweight Championship
Diaz began the fight in typical Diaz fashion, dropping his hands, sticking his chin out and taunting Daley to engage. That's exactly what happened, and Daley struck with the first of a few back and forth barrages early in the fight, getting Diaz down with strikes against the cage and landing some strikes on the ground.
But Diaz was able to recover, and then he went to work as well. His normally flustering style of boxing has gotten even more dangerous, as he's added power to his technical prowess, and he lit Daley up on the cage with vicious body shots and pinpoint accurate shots to the head. Daley was still in the fight, but Diaz was connecting on nice shots while eating some of the counter-punches wildly thrown by Daley.
However, Daley nearly ended Diaz's night with a left hook that flattened the Champion with a couple of minutes remaining. Though he claimed after the fight he hadn't been hurt, things were certainly shaky for him at that point. Daley pounced and attempted to finish him off, but Diaz got his bearings and got back to his feet.
He remained unafraid of Daley's attack, and came straight back at the challenger, lighting him up again with combinations on the cage. Finally, after a vicious combination of body shots and a hook to the jaw, Daley walked forward and tried to push Diaz away. As he did, he stumbled and fell to his back as he was out of sorts. Diaz pounced as time was running out in the round, and delivered a few blows on the ground before referee "Big" John McCarthy stopped the fight with only seconds remaining.
The stoppage has brought an outcry from some fans who felt it was an early stoppage, but though Daley may have been able to survive the end of the round, much like Carlos Condit's third round stoppage of Rory MacDonald last year, or Cris "Cyborg" Santos' late first round stoppage of Gina Carano, the beating was being put on and Daley did go to the ground in suspicious fashion to begin with.
Regardless, Diaz retained the title, and now all involved will look to the future with Strikeforce now under the Zuffa umbrella. But for at least one more night for Strikeforce in his home state of California, Diaz gave the fans another thrilling MMA fight and an incredible performance.

Chael Sonnen to appear in front of NSAC on April 27 for licensing hearing
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Sonnen will appear in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission during their April 27 meeting, at which time the commission will question Sonnen on a number of topics and vote to determine whether or not they will allow Sonnen a license to fight in the state of Nevada and a license to corner fighters as well.
Sonnen will make the appearance due to statements made during a hearing with the California State Athletic Commission in December. At that meeting, Sonnen made claims that he had previously gotten "approval" from the NSAC, specifically NSAC executive director Keith Kizer, for the use of testosterone for hypogonadism prior to his fight with Nate Marquardt. Kizer subsequently denied any such conversations took place or that any such approval had been given.
Kizer then met with Sonnen and officials from the UFC last month in an attempt to clear the air, a meeting that Kizer described as one that did not well. So now, commission members will question Sonnen about his alleged need for testosterone replacement therapy for his condition, the statements he made to the CSAC about their commission, and will determine the next course of action for the future. A majority vote on the commission will allow Sonnen his license and second's license, which will open the door for his return to MMA and a possible coaching slot on The Ultimate Fighter against Michael Bisping that the UFC has reportedly targeted.
Link to Original Source Article
Penick's Analysis: This is sure to be another interesting appearance for Sonnen in front of a state commission. After the debacle with the CSAC, there isn't a lot of faith in an athletic commission to call Sonnen on his B.S. if he presents similar "facts" as those he brought in December, and I wouldn't at all be surprised if this turns into a simple formality proceeding where Sonnen will say whatever he's going to say and get approved regardless of the situation. I'm expecting that to be the case on the 27th, and we'll likely see Sonnen back in the cage, or on television, as soon as the UFC can put him there.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's manager says he's targeting August return; could bring him to Brazil at UFC Rio
Jones defeated "Shogun" by TKO in the third round of their title bout in New Jersey to capture the Light Heavyweight Championship. Jones handled "Shogun" throughout the fight, but though he endured until the third round, the fight turned with one of the first strikes thrown in the first round.
"Some seconds into the bout, Jones connected with a flying knee to his jaw," Alonso explained in an interview with FightHype.com. "This couldn't be seen on the TV broadcast angle, but from the corner, we could see the knee hitting right on the jaw and heard the noise. Right there, it felt strange. Still, we hoped Shogun could pull something off as he is that talented. It was Jones' night though, so props to him."
"We are already talking to the UFC about his next fight. They are really very supportive of us and after the bout, Dana came into the locker room to show support and said he felt rhythm was important for Shogun, so whenever I was ready, I should call him cause they wanted him to fight soon again. I agree with him, and we hope to have Shogun back around August."
Despite the loss and the beating he did take in the fight, Alonso says "Shogun" wasn't hurt badly at all, and is already back to training.
"A lot of people sent me messages asking if Shogun got hurt, but thankfully Mauricio didn't get hurt at all," Alonso said. "After the fight, I took him to the hospital for exams and all was fine. He just had some swelling around his eyes and nothing else. He is training lightly again already."
Link to full interview
Penick's Analysis: If you go back and watch the Jones-Shogun fight, you can see Jones' flying knee connect, and Shogun was never the same in that fight. It could have been a major factor in the remaining minutes of that fight that he was simply not able to recover from, but regardless, Jones walked out the Champ. Shogun should still be able to return strong, and it will be important for him to keep busy and get back to action as much as possible. I'm sure his fans in Brazil would love to see him on that card in Rio at the end of August, and him against any light heavyweight would make for an exciting fight on that card. If Forrest Griffin is healed up, that's a rematch I'd love to see.

Strikeforce picks, Vegas-style: Kawajiri and Daley look to steal title belts
Both are decided underdogs, but they do have quick strike ability on their side. Tatsuya Kawajiri, challenging for the Strikeforce lightweight belt, and Paul Daley, battling for the promotion's welterweight crown, may have one path to pulling the upset and that's heavy hands.
Kawajiri's posted 11 knockouts during his career. A plus-200 underdog, he'll need to do something special to derail Gilbert Melendez, a complete fighter who's out-strategized everyone he's faced recently in Strikeforce.
Frankly, the Japanese veteran probably has a better shot than Daley does against Nick Diaz. Yet because Daley is a more familiar face to many American fans, he's actually fetching a slightly smaller underdog prize at plus-190.
Yahoo!'s lead MMA writer Kevin Iole makes his picks using the Las Vegas odds and surprised us by picking the longest dog on the board as a potential upset winner. Will any of the underdogs cash? If so, who's your picks?
Strikeforce odds (Courtesy Lagasse's Stadium Las Vegas):
Nick Diaz (-240) vs. Paul Daley (+190) - Welterweight
Tatsuya Kawajiri (+200) vs. Gilbert Melendez (-250) - Lightweight
Lyle Beerbohm (+210) vs. Shinya Aoki (-270) - Lightweight

Rashad Evans says Jon Jones is fake, will be the "Milli Vanilli" of MMA in response to Jones interview
An interview Jones did with ESPN's Josh Gross this week has drawn the ire of Evans once again, who took to Twitter in response to comments made by the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Jones commented on their time training together in the interview, and it was a comment meant to garner a response.
"We fought each other in practice," he said. "A finish has been possible several times and it has always been me finishing him. I never did it out of respect that he was the elder of the school. It's against protocol in a way. Some people would do it but I believe in tradition.
"He has a lot to study. I have a lot to study, but I get to study[ing] more in-depth. He gets to study[ing] and gets a headache."
Obviously, Evans didn't take to kindly to the notion that Jones wouldn't finish him in practice out of "respect", especially when said respect didn't apply to the gym's policy of not fighting teammates. In a series of Tweets both aimed at Jones and responding to fans on Twitter, Evans responded:
"[Jones] will [be] mma's version of Milli Vinilli... Wait until the curtain comes down [cause] it will!"
"[I'm] telling [you] that record is about [to] start skipping! 'Girl [you] know, girl [you] know, know,... It's true, true true' (laughs)"
"[Jones] is a swagger jacker"
"He is fake! The fighting is off the hook but as a person he is fake!"
To Jones, whose only response was "#cmonson" - "It's been on!! Get off your own fan bus [cause] nobody is driving! [You] ain't as raw as [you] believe & I'm gonna show ya!"
"I'm just annoyed how he said he could've finished me in practice.. [Are you] kidding me?! (laughs) This dude is nuts!!"
"[Jones] must [be] high! [Cause I] remember him looking at me begging me [to] let him up [cause] he couldn't get back [to] his feet in training."
Finally, to Jones - "[You] ain't forgot what I can do [to you]! Don't believe your hype! [Ask] your coaches! I'm gonna introduce the world [to] the real [you]!"
Is it September yet?
Penick's Analysis: In the same interview with Josh Gross, Jones admitted that he says things on purpose in order to drive controversy and interest. His exact comment was "I'm not afraid to push the envelope. Controversy is good for your career. It gets your Twitter followers up. Some people are going to love it. Some people are going to hate it. I did it on purpose." So I think he knew exactly what his comment was going to get from Rashad. Whether or not he was given trouble by Evans in training doesn't matter right now, because they'll be developing separately over the next six months or so for this fight. It's going to be huge, and there's going to be even more of this type of thing from the two. It's going to keep people interested, it's going to make people take sides, it's going to get two factions of fans heading into this fight and it's all going to be fantastic.

HYDEN BLOG: Who Should Coach The Ultimate Fighter 14?
Last week's blog was about why I don't think the UFC should have Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping be coaches of TUF 14. One of the reasons I feel this way is that Bisping has already been a coach before. I also feel there's more than enough fighters out there that deserve a coaching spot that we don't need repeats. This brings to mind possible choices that I think would be much more interesting to be TUF coaches. These choices would also allow the public to get to know these guys a lot better as well.
Frank Edgar/Gray Maynard and Anthony Pettis/Clay Guida
This obviously depends on the outcomes of the two upcoming fights featuring these four fighters. Edgar and Maynard will fight for the UFC Lightweight title later this year while Pettis and Guida will fight at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale. Pettis may be giving up a shot at the UFC Lightweight title if he loses, but if he wins TUF would be a way to help hype him up. If Guida beats Pettis he might not get a title shot, but stranger things have happened.
Dominick Cruz (If he beats Urijah Faber) vs. Joseph Benavidez
Faber is known to a lot of fans, but Cruz and Benavidez are still a bit under the radar. Cruz fights Faber for the UFC Bantamweight title at UFC 132 in the main event, and is 17-1 with his only loss coming to Faber four years ago. Benavidez is generally considered the #2 Bantamweight in the world and he's only lost twice in his career, with both of his losses coming to Cruz. Their second fight was a split decision after five rounds, and a third meeting between the two would be an outstanding fight. Using TUF to help build them up would be also a great way to let the world know these guys better.
Jose Aldo/Mark Hominick vs. Chad Mendes
Aldo has been a one-man wrecking crew, but Hominick looks to stop him at UFC 129 and win the UFC Featherweight Title. Mendes is 10-0 and just beat Michihiro Omigawa. Mendes might be next in line for a shot at the UFC Featherweight Title and, if so, could be given a coaching spot on an upcoming season of TUF to build that fight up.
Other guys that I think should be given consideration for TUF coaching spots are:
Nick Diaz: Diaz just showed yet again why he's a world-class fighter with his stoppage of Paul Daley. It would damn sure be an interesting season of TUF with Nick as a coach. I'm not sure if he would agree to do it, though.
Gilbert Melendez: Another Strikeforce fighter, so it's hard to find the right match as to who should he coach against, but Melendez is a top-level threat at Lightweight.
Alistair Overeem: One of the best heavyweights in the world deserves to have his name be better known. This would also set him up for a run at unifying the UFC and Strikeforce Heavyweight titles.
Antonio Silva: He just got the biggest win of his career, a big time beatdown of Fedor Emelianenko. The UFC should capitalize on that as quick as they can.
Fedor Emelianenko: The urban legend of MMA fighters. The guy might be more myth than reality at this point, but he deserves a chance to show what he's got. This might be the last chance the UFC has to make a lot of money from a Fedor fight.
I would be mistaken if I didn't also include Cain Velasquez in this list. The only problem is that he's going to fight the winner of Brock Lesnar vs. Junior Dos Santos, who are currently coaching on TUF, and the UFC wouldn't immediately repeat a coach. However, I do think they should fit Cain in there as a coach at some point. He's the UFC Heavyweight Champion and deserves a big stage to get his name out there more.

He may be dating Nikki Reed, an actress in one of the Hollywood's hottest franchises, but Paul McDonald has revealed that he's not a fan of his girlfriend's "Twilight" work - because, well, he's never seen it!
The 26-year-old "American Idol" castoff recently took to KOST 103.5 FM's morning show to dish the jaw-dropping truth, telling the host, "Honestly, I haven't seen any of her movies and know nothing, really, about her work."
Paul also admitted that, when the pair first met, he didn't even know who 22-year-old Nikki was. "She came up to me and was like 'Ah, you're great.' And I was like, 'Awesome, thanks. You're cool, too," he explained.
McDonald says that Reed seems to like the fact that he's blind to her on-screen roles and, for now, he plans on keeping it that way. He told,"I'm not watching any Twilight movies, sorry."

Drummer admits he doesn't know what will come of 'new material.'

On Friday morning, mere hours before he was due to take the stage with classic rockers Foreigner at Detroit's GM Renaissance Center, drummer Jason Bonham — the son of late Led Zeppelin kitman John Bonham — told Jim Johnson and Lynne Woodison of local rock station 94.7 WCSX that he'd be an ex-member of Foreigner as of September 1. But that's not the only thing he said.
Much to the delight of Led Zeppelin fans everywhere, Bonham revealed that he's been meeting up with Led Zep guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones in recent months and that they've been "trying to do some new material and writing."
It was the first time since Led Zeppelin announced they would re-form for a single performance (which happened late last year at London's O2 Arena, in honor of the late Ahmet Ertegün, who signed the band to Atlantic Records in 1969) that anyone connected to the band has confirmed publicly that new music could be on the horizon for the iconic rockers. While the bandmembers have stopped short of definitively ruling out such a reunion, singer Robert Plant insisted in the wake of last year's show that he intended to focus on promoting and touring behind his critically lauded album with bluegrass artist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand.
Not that Bonham knows what — if anything — will happen with the new material he's been working on with Page (who collaborated with pop singer Leona Lewis on an uneven version of Zep's "Whole Lotta Love" at the Olympic closing ceremonies in Beijing on Sunday night) and Jones. He said he just shows up and takes his seat behind the kit.
"I've been over [to England] a couple of times," Bonham said. "I've been working with Jimmy and John Paul and trying to do ... some new material and some writing. I don't know what it will be, but it will be something. At the moment, all I know is I have the great pleasure to go and jam with the two guys and start work on some material. When I get there, I never ask any questions. If I get a phone call to go and play, I enjoy every moment of it. Whatever it ends up as, to ever get a chance to jam with two people like that, it is a phenomenal thing for me. It's my life. It's what I've dreamed about doing."
He said it's still too early to tell what will become of these "jam" sessions, but admitted that the "possibility of doing something is in the cards. I really felt it was in the cards from the moment we walked offstage at the O2." Bonham also explained that, before there could be a Led Zep LP, "lots of politics [would need to] get ironed out," but added that recording with Zep is "something I've always wanted to do."
Bonham noticeably didn't mention frontman Plant's name during the discussion. A spokesperson for Page's management had no comment on the matter, and a spokesperson for Jones' management could not be reached by press time.

Deadmau5 Brings Dance Music To The 'Masses,' Wolfgang Gartner Says
'He has a major role in the younger generation to this music,' producer/DJ tells MTV News of his collaborator.

It's no secret that 2010 was a pivotal year for electronic dance music here in the States. With deadmau5 and Swedish House Mafia becoming household names, the genre's momentum shows no signs of slowing down. Using a conduit of collaboration, artists such as deadmau5 (a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman) have paired up with various underground acts to further the rapid expansion of the genre.
Perhaps one of the most notable movers and shakers of the year is now-Grammy-Award-nominated producer and DJ Wolfgang Gartner, who recently sat down to chat with MTV News about deadmau5 and dance music's rise to the top.
"He has a major role in the younger generation to this music," Gartner says, "but there have been certain artists that have been instrumental in helping it cross over and reach the mainstream — which I think is a good thing. I think rap artists using dance beats is a great thing. I think it just brings more people towards this music that we all love."
Thanks to several key moments, such as deadmau5 taking the helm as house DJ (well, technically "House Artist") for the 2010 VMAs, dance music has been thrown into the forefront of America's youth, a key demographic for any genre.
"Everybody knows who he is now and he's kind of exposing the masses to dance music. These little five-, six- and seven-year-old kids latch on to this 'mau5head' logo — they get into the music and he's bringing this tiny young generation into this music that probably wouldn't be exposed to it."
Gartner certainly doesn't mind the exposure either. Unless you were living under a rock for the past six months, you probably heard one of this past summer's hottest anthems, "Animal Rights," a collaborative effort brought forth by deadmau5 and Gartner.
"It was interesting because I kind of had a preconceived notion about how he would be to work [with]," said Gartner. "I think our sounds are really similar, so I figured he would work in a similar way to me, but the way that he writes music is actually completely different to me. But he achieves kind of the same sound through a completely different process."
Recorded in deadmau5's favorite Los Angeles studio — that would be rocker Tommy Lee's House — "Animal Rights" is a thumping progressive house anthem that melds Wolfgang's unmistakable harmonics and funk riffs with the driving bass line and wobbly synths that make deadmau5 one of the unique forces in the dance music world.
"[Deadmau5] writes these rich complex chord progressions and he does it by drawing these little bars on a grid, which is just amazing that you can do that and get that result," Gartner goes on to say. "It just proves you don't have to be able to play keyboards to write amazing music."
The two sound pioneers never cease to stop pushing the limits on what they are able to produce. Using drastically difference production approaches, deadmau5 and Gartner had the ability to play off each other's strengths while recording the track.
"I'd say the biggest thing is that I play everything in on a keyboard, like even my drums," says Gartner. "I play everything in live and he draws it in with notes on a mouse, which blew me away because his music is very musical."

Kevin Jonas: Falling in Love with Racing
Putting down his instrument to hop in the driver's seat, Kevin Jonas satisfied his need for speed at the 35th Annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach, California over the weekend (April 16).
The "Jonas Brothers" rocker strapped on his sportscar suit while being cheered on by wife Danielle and brothers Nick and Frankie.
Talking about venturing into the motor sports world, Kevin said, "This is one of the first times I've ever done something like this. It's a lot of fun. You have to get used to it. Growing up, you get your license, your permit, then actually get here, you have to relearn how to drive completely."
As for the race itself, the "Camp Rock" star started in eighth while at one point being involved in a crash en route to a finish of 13th out of 18 cars.
Kevin - who prepped for his first raceday by partaking in a four-day racing course at Willow Springs - said upon race's end, "I could see myself falling in love with this for sure."
